Echo of emotions, memories, and experiences

“they emerge spontaneously, mirroring the fluid and intangible nature of saudade”

At the same time, this work is a response to the evolving landscape of modern social life, where human connection is increasingly mediated by technology. As our interactions become confined to the virtual realm, I feel a growing sense of unease -a saudade for the tangible, the present, the real.

About Belmiro Jemusse

“Interestingly, when these works are viewed through the lens of a screen – be it a phone or any digital device – the image appears sharper and more defined than when first experienced with the naked eye. This contrast mirrors our relationship with technology: a sense of hyper-clarity in a world that often feels distant or fragmented in its raw, human form.”

Artist Statement: Saudade

The concept of saudade – a Portuguese and Galician term with no direct English equivalent – resonates deeply within this body of work. It is a word that encapsulates the bittersweet ache of longing, the love that lingers after someone or something is gone. Saudade is the echo of emotions, memories, and experiences that once brought joy, connection, and meaning, now felt as an absence that stirs the senses and revives the past. It is an ironic blend of sadness for what is missing and gratitude for having once had it. This duality is at the heart of my artistic exploration.
